Traveling to Puerto Rico? * SilkMari *

Did you know that Puerto Rico is called
 "Enchanted Island"...
Short History

Located in the northeastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico was the Spanish Empire from the early years of exploration, conquest, and colonization of the new world. Puerto Rico began with the Settlement of the Archipelago of Puerto Rico by the Ortoiroid people between 3,000 and 2,000 BC. Also, other Tribes such as the Saladoid and Arawak Indians populated the Island between 430BC and 1000AD. At the time of Christopher Columbus's arrival to the new world in 1492, the dominant indigenous culture was that of the Taínos Indians. The Taíno people population decreased dangerously low during the latter half of the 16th century because of new infectious diseases carried by European explorers and by Spanish settlers and warfare.

The people of Puerto Rico are composed of 3 races, the Taino Indians, Spanish and African. We are a wonderful mix of skin colors, cultures, and traditions.

Here on my SilkMari Petroglyph Collection, you will see the Taíno Indian Petroglyphs (Drawings) on my Silk Scarves. I have the Sol of Jayuya, the Lady Caguana, and the Taíno Coqui Frog.

Hand Painted Puerto Rico Sol de Jayuya

Petroglyphs are rock carvings or carved in stone. This particular petroglyph, Sol de Jayuya, is not found any other place in Puerto Rico only in Jayuya and so is of great archaeological value.

Our petroglyphs were carved by the Taino Indians who inhabited Puerto Rico in pre-Columbian times (before 1493). Some believe that they are artistic symbols or writings or have a religious significance.

The other petroglyph is ... el Coqui Taino ... also very popular even as inspirations for tattoos. I hand painted the design in earthy colors of camel, bronze and chocolate on habotai silk.
Size: 11 x 60 inches * 27.94 x 152.4 cm

Kissing Cousins Wisteria and Peri

I say this about these two very sweet and charming colors.

Wisteria a pink plum and periwinkle a blue plum make such a romantic pair.

As I was putting the final touches on this hand dyed scarf I could hear the wonderful exotic birds outside my window. The chirping of the birds and the peaceful breeze swaying the palm trees leaves added dimension to an already heavenly day. I extend this to you.

This scarf will look fabulous with jeans. Pair with any blue, pink or plum in your wardrobe for added flare.

Size: 14 x 72 inches * 35.56 x 182.88 cm

Lady Caguana Hand Painted Silk Scarf

This hand painted silk scarf with the "Lady Caguana" Petroglyph is made to order.

This particular Petroglyph is one of the most famous in Puerto Rico. Mujer de Caguana or Caguana Woman-figure is of high social ranking given that she is wearing an elaborated crown and large earrings. She is of advanced age as her eyes are closed and she has a bony thorax. Her lower body is as of frog legs symbolizing vitality and a fertility figure. Power is symbolized in her squatting position with that of demand for respect. She may be an ancestor figure from a noble or powerful family ... or simply a woman.

The other Petroglyph is the "Coqui Taino". This one is also very popular because it represent our tiny tree frog that is flesh tone and has a big ... COqui sound. This lovely sound is heard when daylight falls and at early dawn. You will now the morning light is approaching when the sound of the Coqui starts fading. They love the rain and so after a quick rain shower they will sing again.

These Petroglyphs are carvings on stone found in Puerto Rico and are prehistoric symbols created by the peaceful Taino Indians that inhabited the Island which have indured the test of time. You will find these designs scattered around the Island some in hidden places others in very open and accessable places. It always facinates me that they have been preserved and that someone like myself, an artist, was able to have their work of Art and Culture be seen today.

I have made this a ... Made to Order ... hand painted scarf as I will use the Petroglyphs which I do not change and keep as close to the original as possible. The Petroglyphs are hand painted, outlined in gold as well as the border leaves and stems.

Size: 11x60in * 27.94 x 152.4 cm in Habotai Silk also known as China Silk.
It is signed with my name and also Puerto Rico. It is dyed in camel tan with black.

The scarf will look very much like this one but not exactly the same as the border design is freehand. It will always be one of kind.
