Short History
Located in the northeastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico was the Spanish Empire from the early years of exploration, conquest, and colonization of the new world. Puerto Rico began with the Settlement of the Archipelago of Puerto Rico by the Ortoiroid people between 3,000 and 2,000 BC. Also, other Tribes such as the Saladoid and Arawak Indians populated the Island between 430BC and 1000AD. At the time of Christopher Columbus's arrival to the new world in 1492, the dominant indigenous culture was that of the Taínos Indians. The Taíno people population decreased dangerously low during the latter half of the 16th century because of new infectious diseases carried by European explorers and by Spanish settlers and warfare.
The people of Puerto Rico are composed of 3 races, the Taino Indians, Spanish and African. We are a wonderful mix of skin colors, cultures, and traditions.
